Lance Austin Olsen
drypoint engraving with chine collé
12 x 12 inch image / 18 x 18 inch paper
edition of 1
An intaglio print from Olsen’s live sound performances in which his various actions of drawing on copper plates were amplified for the audience using microphones. Between performances, the resulting plates were printed as unique drypoint prints, creating a map of Olsen’s gestures made on the copper. As the plates were reused, earlier marks slowly receded into the background on subsequent printing sessions.
Printed on German Etching buff colour paper with torn deckle edge. Signed and dated in pencil.
Intaglio – either an engraved or scratched (drypoint) line in a hard material, such as copper, is inked by hand, and then printed onto paper using significant pressure.
Chine collé – the bonding of a tissue-thin paper to a heavier paper through the use of an intaglio printing press.
